Professional Development Sessions

By design, professional development sessions should be grounded in effective staff development principles and tailored to the administrator's learning and competency profile that draws upon the school's or district's improvement plan. The Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Professional Development Course offering centers on the Nine Categories of Critical Performance areas in excellent schools.

  1. Student Focus and Support
  2. School Organization and Culture
  3. Challenging Standards and Curriculum
  4. Active Teaching and Learning
  5. Technology Integration
  6. Professional Community
  7. Leadership and Educational Vitality
  8. School, Family, and Community Partnerships
  9. Indicators of Success

As both a school recognition and school improvement organization, our courses are designed to maximize the attendees' utilization and access to real solutions and networks that will support a school system indefinitely. Once the path to ensuring success has been selected, Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence School Recognition via the Lighthouse Award or School Improvement process, participating in one of the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence professional development sessions can catapult your school to the next level.

Our practitioners will tailor a professional development session to help your school solve a real-life challenge based upon one of the nine categories. Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence practitioners have been trained in the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Assessment Methodology, are proven change-agents in their field and have produced high performing students and schools.

Extended Course Offering

As an extension of the School Recognition and Improvement Solutions, the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence has developed the following Professional Development Course Offering:

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Cost: $3600.00

Professional Development credit is available through coordination and approval with the district's curriculum development department. Attendees will work collaboratively to organize a 5 Step Implementation Strategy for solving challenges related to the goals of the session.

In 2010, the Blueprint for Excellence School Improvement Model was selected to be a local educational partner of Information Transport Solutions, Inc., (ITS) to provide a pre and post assessment of ITS’ Project C.A.R.E. Educational Solutions. The Blueprint would gather input from a school’s educational community to identify gains and opportunity areas from Year 1 (2010) of the iCare Solution to Year 3 (2013) in all Nine Critical Performance Areas.

ITS collaborated with four Alabama school districts to transform student achievement by implementing Project C.A.R.E. The project focused on three components: standards based instruction, data analysis and technology integration.

Become a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School

Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, Inc. (BRSE), has worked over the years to develop and refine a means for a school's own stakeholders to assess the school's performance and design program improvement initiatives focused on the results of that assessment. The BRSE Blueprint for Excellence is designed to be a positive school improvement process that covers nine major categories of critical performance elements found in excellent schools.

The nine major categories of critical performance in excellent schools.

  • Student Focus and Support
  • School Organization and Culture
  • Challenging Standards and Curriculum
  • Active Teaching and Learning
  • Technology Integration
  • Professional Community
  • Leadership and Educational Vitality
  • School, Family, and Community Partnerships
  • Indicators of Success

The Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School Award is a recognition program for schools of excellence and is not designed as a typical application process. Schools are identified and selected for this award based on achievement of excellent performance in all nine major categories of the Blueprint for Excellence assessment. Schools achieving excellence in less than nine categories could be eligible for the "Points of Light" Award or recognition as an Aspiring School. Schools will be notified of their status soon after completion of the assessment process and honored in an awards ceremony at the annual Blue Ribbon Schools Blueprint for Excellence Conference in December. These awards are given at the sole discretion of the BRSE.

An assessment does not imply or guarantee award eligibility. In fact, a school often implements improvement strategies to move from Aspiring School, to Points of Light School, Blue Ribbon Beacon School and then to Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School.

Within a 40 day process, Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence can provide a school with data on their strengths and weaknesses in nine critical areas of school performance.

This data is based upon feedback from students, parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff. Within that same 40 day process, BRSE can get a school started on the path to improvement by delivering a Blueprint for Excellence Plan that provides strategies for overcoming deficiencies and connects the school with leaders from other schools who have a proven track record in the target school’s area of weakness.

Through its ongoing network of regional workshops and and national conferences, BRSE provides a structure for continuous improvement and a means to celebrate and reward success.

BRS Assessment & Lighthouse Award Process

Carefully Read and Follow These Instructions

  1. The school submits a letter of interest that provides specific information (see information below).
  2. The school administration completes an online demographic description of the school.
  3. The school completes the online assessment tool. Building level administrators, certified staff members, support staff members, a sample of students, and a sample of parents and community stakeholders participate.
    • The validity and reliability of the process depends on honest responses from the entire school community.
    • The assessment is designed to assure completely confidential data collection. Individual responses are not tracked or reported -- only group responses.
    • The assessment can be completed in as little as one day, depending on the scheduling of your respondents.
  4. Once all the data are compiled, experts at Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, Inc., prepare a final report that cites areas of success and areas in need of improvement, as reported by the school community. The report is reviewed in complete detail with the school and/or district administrators and includes:
    • Demographics Report
    • School Strengths Report
    • No Consensus Report
    • Critical Areas Report
    • Action Plan Report
    • Student Grade Level Report
    • Total Accumulation of Data Report
    • Lighthouse Eligibility Schematic
  5. A site visitor comes to the school to validate the results by reviewing data, meeting with school representatives, and observing classrooms.
  6. An additional site visit may be conducted, if needed, to validate improvement gains suggested by the assessment.
  7. The school may decide to develop an improvement plan with assistance from representatives of Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, Inc.

Make sure to provide the following:

  • Description of the School
  • Statement of Need
