Session: School Organization and Culture

School culture refers to the shared beliefs, customs, and behavior in relation to academic, social, political, geographic, and communal institutions of an educational system. Such institutions must be clearly defined and embedded within the make-up of the school, and fostered by the school board, school district personnel, school administrators, teachers, students, parents and community partners in order to have a positive school culture.

As schedules, curriculum, demographics, policies, and social interactions give way to the "intangibles", it is the intangibles that are a major determinant of success within a school.

Four Questions:

  •  How do you create an engaged educational community?
  •  What does hiring has to do with it?
  •  How do you develop a healthy and sustainable relationship amongst peers and adults?
  •  What is a safe positive environment?

Goals One:  Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence will coordinate with the designated educators to define and provide examples of how members of an educational community can be engaged within collective inquiry, reflection, and responsible decision making about learning.

Goal Two:  Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence will coordinate with the designated educators to define an acceptance criteria for hiring and assignments and duties of staff members.

Goal Three:  Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence will coordinate with designated educators to define and provide examples of the various opportunities for students to build sustained and caring relationships with adults and to develop a healthy peer climate among students.

Goal Four:  Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence will coordinate with designated educators to define a safe and orderly environment that is focused on the welfare and continuous achievement of all students and staff.

Session: Leadership and Educational Vitality

Dynamic leadership engages the school and community in continuous school improvement focused on student learning and based on vision, data, knowledge of research, effective practice, and continuous monitoring and assessment that has resulted in high levels of student achievement and implementation of comprehensive plans to meet current and future practices.

Four Questions:

  •  How effective are the leaders moving the school towards the vision and mission?
  •  What
  •  What evidence exists of a school-wide culture that supports ongoing, student -focused improvement.

Goals One:  Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence will coordinate with the designated educators to define the roles of leaders and focus on their impact on achieving the school's vision and mission.

Goals Two:  Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence will coordinate with the designated educators to define the roles of internal and external stakeholders to in the decision making process resulting in the desired outcome.

Goal Three:

Session: Implementation of the Action Plan

The practitioners' of the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence methodology are sharing the proven strategies for addressing the 9 Strands. The Action Plan contained within the Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Assessment Report can be a powerful tool for reforming a school from within. The session will tap into the plan-act-do methodology that fosters collaboration and encourages a visual tracking of progress and accountability.

Tackling the Action Plan can be daunting. This session will help your entire school community work toward a common goal; excellence.

Session: Active Teaching & Learning

There is clear and compelling evidence that purposeful decision-making should govern all aspects of the teaching and learning process. There is a discernable link between instructional strategies and student achievement. Within this session attendees will have an opportunity to learn the core competencies of instructional design and to share best practices.

Educational Solutions. The Blueprint would gather input from a school’s educational community to identify gains and opportunity areas from Year 1 (2010) of the iCare Solution to Year 3 (2013) in all Nine Critical Performance Areas.

ITS collaborated with four Alabama school districts to transform student achievement by implementing Project C.A.R.E. The project focused on three components: standards based instruction, data analysis and technology integration.

Become a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School

Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, Inc. (BRSE), has worked over the years to develop and refine a means for a school's own stakeholders to assess the school's performance and design program improvement initiatives focused on the results of that assessment. The BRSE Blueprint for Excellence is designed to be a positive school improvement process that covers nine major categories of critical performance elements found in excellent schools.

The nine major categories of critical performance in excellent schools.

  • Student Focus and Support
  • School Organization and Culture
  • Challenging Standards and Curriculum
  • Active Teaching and Learning
  • Technology Integration
  • Professional Community
  • Leadership and Educational Vitality
  • School, Family, and Community Partnerships
  • Indicators of Success

The Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School Award is a recognition program for schools of excellence and is not designed as a typical application process. Schools are identified and selected for this award based on achievement of excellent performance in all nine major categories of the Blueprint for Excellence assessment. Schools achieving excellence in less than nine categories could be eligible for the "Points of Light" Award or recognition as an Aspiring School. Schools will be notified of their status soon after completion of the assessment process and honored in an awards ceremony at the annual Blue Ribbon Schools Blueprint for Excellence Conference in December. These awards are given at the sole discretion of the BRSE.

An assessment does not imply or guarantee award eligibility. In fact, a school often implements improvement strategies to move from Aspiring School, to Points of Light School, Blue Ribbon Beacon School and then to Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School.

Please review the complete process for detailed information.
